What should I pay attention to when buying sunglasses?
I am really confused! Most cheap sunglasses say 100% UV Protection, but I heard that it has to say 100% UVA and UVB Protection to get full protection. Is this true? Will I be fine if I just have 100% UV Protection? Thanks
There are three categories of invisible high-energy UV rays:
UVC rays. These are the highest-energy UV rays and potentially could be the most harmful to your eyes and skin. Fortunately, the atmosphere’s ozone layer blocks virtually all UVC rays.
UVB rays. These have slightly longer wavelengths (280–315 nm) and lower energy than UVC rays. These rays are filtered partially by the ozone layer, but some still reach the earth’s surface.
UVA rays. These are closer to visible light rays and have lower energy than UVB and UVC rays. But UVA rays can pass through the cornea and reach the lens and retina inside the eye.
Look for sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB radiation, referring to long-wave and short-wave solar rays. UVB is the most dangerous, but UVA also can be damaging. When choose a pair of sunglasses never think of money before quality as not all sunglasses block 100% of UV rays.Try at least one pair of sunglasses with large lenses or a close-fitting wraparound style.
